PAST EVENTS - Amsterdam 2004

World Telemedia Amsterdam 25 – 28 April 2004

The Spring World Telemedia returned to it’s regular base of the Hotel Krasnapolsky in the heart of Amsterdam. This was our 9th visit to this wonderful city and provided the right blend of city life, café culture and party venues to ensure that delegates enjoyed the 24hr a day atmosphere that is an integral part of the World Telemedia Shows.

Show Review

World Telemedia Amsterdam: Going from Strength to Strength
By Paul Skeldon
(The full article appears in the NOC newsletter Volume 7, Issue 5. Visit Noconline.org)

April’s World Telemedia show in Amsterdam must go down in industry history as one of the most successful yet. While the conference at the event has, for the past few shows, gone from strength to strength, this year’s event saw record attendance figures for both AOE and World Telemedia, with nigh on 1200 people through the doors over the four days that the event was held.

Not only that, but World Telemedia also saw the launch of a number of new products, as well as the inking of a massive deal that ties network operators, One World Interactive and Opera, into a massive mobile music and video distribution deal, with UK based WebTV and music giant Universal Music.

As part of the announcement of the deal at World Telemedia, the huge crowd in the exhibition hall was treated to the ’world’s first collective download’ of quality videoclips from some of Universal’s artists.

The company confirmed that network operators One World Interactive, a provider of access and billing solutions for interactive content, and Opera Telecom will be the first distributors for the service. A number of other providers will be announced shortly.

While all this was going on, Redstone Communications was launching an advanced Intelligent Network platform for cost-effective, reliable hosted SMS and Premium Rate Services (PRS) at the Show. Redstone will manage the new network in partnership with BT Wholesale. What attracted a great deal of interest was the comprehensive range of features that will greatly extend the choice and control available to organisations that want to host SMS and PRS services over a highly resilient, BT-enabled network.

The conference also attracted a great deal of interest, especially the NOC organised session on the UK MNO’s Code of Practice. The NOC also had another success with it’s survey of interest in an ETNS International Telemedia platform, which was carried out at the show and received a very enthusiastic response.

While all this was going on, the World Telemedia event was preparing to give birth to the latest addition to its ever growing family of closely tailored dedicated specialist events. The much vaunted TeleTV summit, which started the day after World Telemedia managed to draw most of the World Telemedia delegates into the conference room for a 9am start. This was despite following the Telessential/Opera hosted Blues Brothers party the night before. Delegates in the conference rooms heard the latest on how the world of TV needs to work with the telemedia industry to maximise the opportunities of fixed and mobile telecoms based interaction. The inaugural event was such a success, that many are already talking of how good the next TeleTV Summit — and indeed the whole World Telemedia circus will be, when it pulls in to Lisbon in early November. The conferences rooms in Amsterdam were packed, the quality of the conference was at its highest yet and there is more to come. Watch this space.
